I’m back!

In case you hadn’t noticed it from the new posts, I’m back online. I got a new computer for Christmas – a triple core x64 box from AMD, thankyouverymuch – and getting that box up and running was no problem. However, I also upgraded my SBS server from my ancient BP6 to my old desktop – a 3 GHz P4 – and for some reason, SBS just doesn’t like the P4 very much. I had to install SBS several times to get a stable OS, and many times I appeared to have succeeded, only to find that some component wasn’t working properly. What fun!

In any case, everything is up and running at the moment, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Google Chrome hearts me!

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve changed a couple of things on the trusty jimcofer.com server, and now Google Chrome appears to work with my site!

As I mentioned in previous posts, I used to run a “regular” website, and then installed WordPress in the /personal directory on my server. Once I ditched the “old fashioned” site, I changed the root index.htm file to simply redirect users to /personal, where WordPress would take over. While this “hack” worked with every…other…browser in existence, Chrome – for whatever reason – didn’t like that at all… not even the latest 1.0 version, which may or may not include the new stack which would (supposedly) fix this issue. However, last night I actually set up the redirect on the server side, and Chrome now works with jimcofer.com!

Unfortunately, Chrome still doen’t work for our sister site, belmontpc.info. I’m continuing to look into that issue…

New feature: ShareThis

Hi folks!

I finally entered the 21st century and have added ShareThis to my site! ShareThis allows you to share a post or page with your friends via Digg, Reddit, Facebook, MySpace, del.icio.us, Technocrati, Google Bookmarks, Yahoo Bookmarks, Windows Live, and several other social networking and online bookmarking sites, in addition to email, AIM, text message.. and more!

To use the service, simply click the ShareThis button at the end of each post or page.

Comment Line Disconnected

A quick update: the jimcofer.com comment line has been disconnected.

It was provided by AOL as part of their free “AOL Phoneline” service. I recently received an email saying that the service would be discontinued in early January. Since no one ever called the comment line (ever), I’m removing all references to it on this site and will cease checking messages today.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for understanding!

Jim

Facebook and my site are one!

OK, so… as I mentioned a few days ago, I recently signed up with Facebook after being “MySpace Only” for the past couple of years. One of the cool things about Facebook is that you can add an RSS feed to the “Notes” section of your profile. So I could use this site’s RSS feed to automatically “copy” entries I make here into my Facebook account. People that have no idea I even have a site would be able to read anything I post here.

Neat, huh? And that’s exactly what I did. If you’re my friend on Facebook, look for posts from this site as new Notes in my profile. If you have no idea what any of that means, don’t worry: it’s not for you. Also, for some reason, Facebook’s RSS importer kind of sucks, so you might see gibberish characters in Facebook when I post something here that looks perfectly normal.

Jim Cofer: Now on Facebook

I was talking to my friend Holly last week when she mentioned that she’s on Facebook.

I have always been on MySpace, mainly because that’s what all my Charlotte friends use. Honestly, I don’t care about either that much, since this site is what occupies my time. Sure, I have a MySpace page, but I usually spend around 10 minutes a week on MySpace.

However, I did think it was kind of bizarre that I didn’t have any sort of presence on Facebook, so as of this past Saturday night, I am a member of Facebook! I only posted this now because my profile was empty for the first couple of days. Earlier this week I cut and pasted all my MySpace profile stuff into my Facebook one, so now there’s actually stuff there worth seeing.

My profile is here.

Hit me up sometime, peeps!

Outage Possible

Hi folks! I just wanted to let you know that outages are possible for this site over the next few days, as the datacenter that hosts jimcofer.com is located in Houston, which is currently in the path of Hurricane Ike. My host assures me that their emergency plan is fully in place, and that they have several days worth of diesel in the generators, so everything should be good… but you never can tell with these things.
