PBR is $9 at new Yankee Stadium!

The “new” Yankee Stadium is almost open for business… and guess what? They’ve replaced many of the “Beers Around The World” stalls with “Retro Beer” ones instead. These new stalls will sell “hipster” beers like Pabst, Ballantyne, Schlitz and Schaefer. I can’t speak for the other beers, but I do know that the 24 oz. cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon are going for the obscene price of $9 each, an 800% markup over what my local convenience store charges for the same product.

PBR at NYS

Of course, this might actually be a “bargain” if the new stadium is charging $6 for a 12oz. Bud draft. At the very least, buying 24oz. of beer at a time should cut down on the amount of time you stand in line. But still…

Giants release Burress

No surprise here – the Giants got rid of Plexiglass. He’s an awesome player, but apparently a horrible human being. This (and not money) is why the Steelers got rid of him back in 2004(?).

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New York Giants released Super Bowl hero Plaxico Burress on Friday, a little more than four months after the talented but troubled wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the thigh in a New York City nightclub.

Burress’ four-year tenure with the Giants was highlighted by a game-winning touchdown catch in the Super Bowl against the previously undefeated New England Patriots in February 2008, but it also was dogged by fines and suspensions.

NFL Re-Ups with DirecTV

This is bad news:

The National Football League has reached a four-year contract agreement with DirecTV for the leading satellite provider to remain the TV home for the Sunday Ticket package through 2014.

Announced during the NFL owners meeting in Dana Point, Calif., the pay-per-view pact, according to sources familiar with the negotiations, is valued at about $1 billion annually from 2011-2014. DirecTV currently pays some $700 million on its Sunday Ticket contract that expires after the 2010 season.

However, the agreement opens the door to a wider reach for the out-of-home package, which will become available to broadband subscribers that can’t receive DirecTV. This service is aimed at those who reside in multi-unit dwellings or satellite customers with poor sightlines to a satellite signal.

I had hoped that the NFL would finally allow cable operators to offer Sunday Ticket as a cable package (or, even better, games a la carte)… but no dice, at least until 2014. This sucks, but I guess $4 billion is nothing to sneeze at.

Ravens Wimp Out!

Awwwwww… The poor Baltimore Ravens! It seems that the Browns Ravens don’t want to play at Pittsburgh in prime-time this year, and have petitioned the NFL to have any such games taken off their schedule:

There were rumors that the NFL would begin this season with Ravens-Steelers, a rematch of the AFC championship game, for its Thursday night game. But the Ravens asked not to be considered for a prime-time game at Heinz Field this season when they submitted their scheduling requests to the league, a team official told The Baltimore Sun.

Seriously? What, are you guys afraid to play the Steelers? Seriously? Don’t want to break the cycle of prime-time ass kickings (the Ravens have never beaten the Steelers in Pittsburgh in prime-time)? What is it, Bawlmerr? You guys too chicken to take on Steeltown after losing to us three times last year?

Random fact: the 2008 Steelers became the first team in NFL history to beat a team three times in three different uniforms in a single season: week 4 at home (throwbacks), week 15 in Baltimore (whites), and the AFC Championship in Pittsburgh (home black).

Rooney ambassador to Ireland

It’s official!

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Tuesday selected Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney to be U.S. ambassador to Ireland, turning to a lifelong Republican who provided the Democrat critical campaign support during the White House race.

The 76-year-old Rooney endorsed Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton during Pennsylvania’s contentious Democratic primary; Clinton won the contest last April. Rooney later campaigned for him in Steelers country in western Pennsylvania, and Obama went on to win the state last November.

In the 1970s, Rooney helped found the American Ireland Fund, an organization that has raised millions for advocacy of peace and education in Ireland. His legacy is reflected in a Steelers-themed bar in a disused linen mill in one of the roughest parts of northwest Belfast.

Congrats, Mr. Rooney!

The Curse of the Colonel (Revisited)

In this History Blog post, I talked about the various “curses” in the baseball world, especially the “Curse of the Colonel”.

In a nutshell, Japan’s Hanshin Tigers baseball team always seemed to have the same “snakebit luck” as the Chicago Cubs. The Tigers just never seemed to be able to win it all, despite being a rich, major market team with many fans. Back in 1985, however, the team won the Japan Championship Series (Japan’s version of the World Series). In a fit of celebration, a swarm of fans ran to the nearest bridge. As the crowd screamed out the number of a player, a fan resembling him would jump off the bridge and into the river. But there was a problem: a big reason the Tigers won the Series was the bat work of an American player, Randy Bass. And there weren’t any Americans around to jump off the bridge when Randy’s number was called. A few fans took matters into their own hands and ran to the nearest Kentucky Fried Chicken. There they stole the fiberglass statue of Colonel Sanders that stands outside many Asian KFC restaurants. So when Bass’ number was called, the jubilant crowd heaved the statue off the bridge and into the water.

Since then, the Tigers have posted one of the worst records in Japanese baseball. Many were convinced that the Colonel had “cursed” the team. A few fans even pooled money to dredge the river in hopes of finding the statue. Alas, the statue was never found, and the Tigers continued to lose…

But now there’s hope! The statue has been found! You can read all about it at Yahoo! here, but the gist of it follows:

A diver checking for unexploded bombs from World War Two in the river as part of a clean-up found the Colonel’s top half on Tuesday, minus his hands and glasses but still sporting his trademark string tie and grin.

The Colonel’s smile might have widened if it could on Wednesday, when his bottom half was recovered and reunited with the top. “It’s only a statue, but I felt as if I was rescuing someone,” a worker told reporters after the lower half was found.

“When I heard the statue had been found, I felt that history had ended,” Yoshio Yoshida, 75, Hanshin manager at the time, was quoted by the Asahi newspaper as saying. “Recalling 1985, I’d like them to achieve the dream of being Japan No. 1 again.”

New football league wants Vick

How come I haven’t heard of the “United Football League” at all until now? Is this real? Who’s behind this? When did this happen?

The fledgling United Football League, set to play in four cities beginning in October, will officially announce its four head coaches at a press conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.

In addition to former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, who will lead the Las Vegas team, the UFL has hired Dennis Green as San Francisco’s coach, Jim Haslett for Orlando and Ted Cottrell for New York. All except Cottrell have been head coaches in the NFL.

It is also believed the league is trying to have former NFL quarterback Michael Vick play in its inaugural season. Vick is scheduled to be released from prison in May but faces a suspension from the NFL for his conviction related to dogfighting.

Dan Rooney: Ireland ambassador?

There were rumors about this a few weeks ago, and now the rumor mill is at it again:

According to a report out of Ireland, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney will be named the U.S. ambassador to Ireland.

A report in the Tribune-News indicates Rooney, 76, will succeed Thomas C Foley, who recently returned home to the US. Rooney is a co-founder of the Ireland Fund charity with Sir Anthony O’Reilly. The account also indicated Rooney helped bring peace to Northern Ireland.

That would be so awesome for Mr. Rooney! You go, Dan!

T.O. released from Cowboys

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has spent most of the offseason providing vague hints that wide receiver Terrell Owens would return for the 2009 season. It now appears he’s decided to go in a different direction.

According to a report from ESPN’s Michael Smith late Wednesday evening, the Cowboys have released T.O. In recent interviews, Jones had stressed that wide receiver Roy Williams needed to be the focal point of the offense next season. The Cowboys sent their first- and third-round picks in this April’s draft to the Lions for Williams — and now they’ve placed even more pressure on him to perform.

Ever since the Cowboys’ season-ending 44-6 loss to the Eagles, Jones has maintained that chemistry in the locker room is overrated. He loathes admitting mistakes and that’s why many of us thought he would press on with T.O.
